The focus of Siu Nim Tao is to introduce the student to the ideas of center line, relaxation, and efficiency. Center line cuts the body into equal right and left sides. It is important to be aware of this because targets important to attack and defense fall on or on either side of it; places such as the eyes nose and throat. Control of the center line allows the student to protect the most important targets on their own body, and at the same time attack the most important targets of an opponent. The idea of relaxation is also very important. Relaxation is important for learning and applying techniques learned in class properly, avoiding injury and promoting good health. It also allows the student to keep an attentive and open mind during class. Efficiency refers to economy of motion. With no wasted motions the quickest and surest techniques can be used for any situation. With efficiency in mind a student can focus on learning and mastering the smallest number of techniques needed for self-defense, while simplifying the learning process itself. These ideas persist though out Ving Tsun, so Siu Nim Tao is the first thing that is taught, and should be practiced often.
